Obituary – Jonathan Marshall
26 November 2009
Jonathan (‘Jon’) Marshall, a director of Clarksons and a senior dry cargo broker, died suddenly on Monday (23rd Nov) at the age of 56.
A keen advocate of the training and education of young brokers, at the time he was chairing the opening day of the Company’s annual training course for their own and their clients’ trainees. The course is a week long series of lectures and visits; as a tribute to him, they will in future be known as the Jon Marshall Lectures.
Jon Marshall joined Clarksons from Glover Bros. in 1981. His father, Mike Marshall, was a senior director of Clarksons whom he served for more than 40 years. Much of Jon’s career was spent in the deep sea section, his principal clients being Canadian Forest, Star Shipping and a number of prominent London based Greek owners. He was also head of training for the Dry Cargo Division and was instrumental in developing the Company’s training scheme.
Jon was popular among his colleagues and the refrain ‘There’s only one Jonny Marshall’ was regularly sung at parties and social events. He was a talented pianist and composer, wrote a musical, and submitted a number of entries for the Eurovision Song Contest, though without achieving success.
He is survived by his widow, Angela, and his daughter Jennifer, who is at Cambridge University.
